I had previously posted this content elsewhere, but this legislative session has me shaking my head that we have apparently lost ground on showing each other love and compassion. In Texas, law makers are pushing anti-bullying legislation and anti-Hispanic legislation simultaneoulsy. If you’re not scratching your head, you should be. I’d like to add the following groups to the “Who’s Who of Bullying Victims”:
Makes you wonder who is voting, right? Imagine if we created a “Bullied Groups for Change” coalition. At this point I’m thinking that should include everyone except the wealthiest .1% of Caucasian males in American. That’s crazy political power. I’m going to let that swim around in your head a bit. My wish for this year is that bullied groups stop letting others pit them against each other. Hispanic Americans scared of Islamic Americans. Women scared of Gay Americans. Non-rich scared of minorities who want their jobs. None of that makes sense. Right now, if you’re honest with yourselves, we’re all swimming at the bottom together. Please stop being so easily convinced to find meaning in your life by demeaning others. It’s hateful and it’s technique used by the powerful to distract you while they abuse you further. I mean, I ask my fellow non-rich people…while you’ve been distracted by Mexican immigrants taking your jobs, who just took your job? “oh, wait, huh, I swear I put my wallet right here in my back pocket…”
So getting back to my previously posted concerns:
I’ve written this note a hundred times in my head, but kept failing to get it on “paper.” However, the events of the last month have disgusted me so thoroughly; I can no longer keep it inside. What I want to do is yell and scream and curse, and to be perfectly honest, I actually have done all of those things in the privacy of my car. (If you’ve seen me going nutso on my morning or evening commute, and thought to yourself “note to self, Angie is CRAZY,” now perhaps you’ll understand.) What I’m going to do instead is calmly provide an alternate opinion to the screaming, bullying crazies of the world. I do this because last year, when the crazies convinced half of the Superintendents across Texas that President Obama was the boogie man and shouldn’t be allowed to speak to our children (despite previous presidents having done so without incident), I swore I would not remain silent when the crazies went crazy. I’m not going to be crazy, but I’m not going to be silent either.
So, back to the title of this note….Hmmm…where do children learn to bully? Remember that old commercial where the dad finds pot under the kid’s bed, and he’s yelling at Junior, “WHERE DID YOU LEARN TO DO THIS!?” And the kid finally cracks, crying, and yells, “FROM YOU ALRIGHT? I LEARNED IT FROM WATCHING YOU!” Same concept. We have everyone from Betty down the street, to religious leaders and politicians spewing their hateful rhetoric about gays, lesbians, and people of Islamic faith. Why then would it come as a shock that children and young adults also think this is acceptable? I said I was going to be calm, and I am, but allow me this one trek to the dark side… Hateful, ugly, nasty people, who hate yourselves and everyone else, please….SHUT UP!
Now, let’s talk specifics.
Bullied group #1: Gays and Lesbians.
People are gay, people are lesbian, people are straight. WHY DO YOU CARE? Because you have to find a new group to belittle in your cowardly attempt to boost your miserable self-esteem? Same tired religious arguments, new target. I hear all the time, “it’s a choice, and it’s immoral.” Okay, let’s say it’s a choice, WE LIVE IN AMERICA. You can choose to be anything you want as long as you don’t cause harm to others. Now, if it’s not something you would choose to do, live in peace with that, and stop persecuting other people. If you find you’re overly concerned about the sex lives of others, I’m going to give you a piece of advice I learned from my mother, “worry more about yourself and worry less about other people’s business.” Through experience I’ve learned that people who are overly concerned about the behavior of others do so because it’s easier to point fingers at others than recognize and clean up your own mess. Well, I think it’s time to say, “Not my issue.” Go take an accountability class, see a therapist, learn to love yourself, and stop bullying others. Sweet, loving, good children and people are killing themselves because they’re tormented about being gay or lesbian. Is this what you wanted? Do you feel better now? Would you care if it was YOUR child? Even if you believe your chosen religious doctrine does not support homosexuality, do you believe it supports hate and persecution? Or do you think that what you’re doing is kind and loving? Jesus had some fights to fight, but I don’t recall him tearing down others with hatefulness. He just loved people. That brings up an important point, actually, learn to pick your battles people. THIS is the most important issue right now? THIS IS? Are you kidding me? Children are beaten, molested, and murdered every day. But two men or women loving each other is the number one issue weighing on you? Can you imagine the impact you would have on REAL issues if you directed your energy toward them? I’m hoping you can. And before you try the whole, “gay man pedophile” farce, let me assure you, heterosexuals commit these atrocities way more frequently, and some of the worst physical abuse committed on children is committed by heterosexual couples.
And hey, if you’re not one of the crazy haters, please, speak up!
Bullied group #2: People of Islamic Faith
I am so tired of this religious persecution. Today I read something that was simply the last straw for me. Sharron Angle, a tea party candidate, tried to draw a parallel between a group wanting to build a Catholic Church near the site of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp and the Mosque being built near ground zero. I don’t know the facts, but she stated that the Catholic Church realized the error of the idea and respectfully decided not to build. She’s suggesting that the builders of the Islamic Center near ground zero do the same. This entire argument is so ignorant and bigoted, I can barely contain my anger. Auschwitz was used by Hitler’s regime to exterminate people of Jewish faith and any other dissenters …because Hitler was a psychopathic, egomaniacal, “religious” extremist. 9/11 was an attack on Americans. AMERICANS are Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Agnostic, Atheist, _________. There were people of Islamic Faith in the Twin Towers! I’m so disgusted that Christian extremists are turning this into an Islam versus Christianity issue. ISLAMIC EXTREMISTS carried out the attacks on the Twin Towers. These people are not representative of the entire faith. In fact, if you would take time to educate yourself, you’d find that the two faiths have a lot in common, including ORIGIN. Perhaps if you weren’t so busy with the “us vs. them” business. Likewise, these hateful Christians are not representative of the Christian faith, and I endeavor to remind myself of this every day. Many of you know, I’m Agnostic…more on that bullied group later. I love people of all faiths. I have friends in all faiths. I love my Muslim friends, and frankly, I take this bigotry as an attack on me and them. So, stop talking ugly about people. GOOD people. These are MY friends you’re attacking, not just some nameless, faceless, group you attack for votes, or notoriety, or to make you feel better about your miserable self. Furthermore, we’ve been down this road before… we applied this same ignorant logic when we sat by and allowed De Witt to convince us to move Japanese AMERICANS into internment camps in WWII. Didn’t make sense then, MAKES LESS SENSE NOW.
And hey, if you have friend of Islamic faith, or even if you don’t but you’re not a hater, speak up!
Bullied group #3: Illegal immigrants. Oh no, let me be specific, illegal immigrants from Mexico.
This one’s pretty easy. They’re not out for your jobs; we’re too lazy to do their jobs. Meanwhile the jobs you’d do have been outsourced to other countries who allow our rich corporations to pay slave wages. Thus allowing the corporation to make a larger profit by which to pay off your politicians who then demonize illegal immigrants from Mexico so you won’t pay attention to the fact that they’re robbing you blind and eliminating your jobs. Wake up and pay attention. Raise your hand if you want to pick oranges. No? No one? Okay, raise your hand if you know someone who wants to pick oranges. No? No one? Then please, shhhhhhhh, and ask yourself, WWJD?
And hey, if you know someone who’s undocumented, speak up. If you don’t think you know someone who’s undocumented, you’re probably living in a cave.
Bullied group #4: Agnostics and Atheists.
Oh my word, the amount of misinformation about these groups is staggering. Atheists do not worship the devil. They don’t worship anything. They think, hey, you know, when I die, I’m fertilizer. While they’re alive they just don’t want Person A, B, and C’s warped or unwarped idea of religion to affect their life. And, bonus, they live in America, so they’re in the right place. Agnostics. Agnostics are not Atheists, which means they are not devil worshippers either. Agnostics are generally spiritual people who don’t claim to know the answers about religion. No, they don’t want the Ten Commandments taught in schools, but they’re fine with generally accepted ethical principles, and they’re fine with you going to church all day, every day. I’m Agnostic. I think Mother Theresa and Gandhi both had pretty good chances of making to heaven, or transcendence, whichever you prefer. I have good friends who love me, and who know I’d give the shirt off my back for them, who talk about the non-religious, including Agnostics, like they’re out to hurt people and ruin the country. Ask yourself…am I? Is Angie out to hurt people and ruin the country? Or did you think I’m Christian because I’m so giving and loving? Nope, I’m just me, and I love you. Heck, I love people I’ve never even met. The non-religious don’t want to take away your faith. I know you think your religion is good, and I’m happy for you. I am, but please read above to find out why I don’t trust religion. That’s why I’d prefer that my kids learn to read and write at school. I’ll take care of the spirituality. I LOVE SPIRITUALITY. I couldn’t survive without out it. I pray all the time. I know people of all faiths who are amazing, and I know people of all faiths who scare the hell out of me. I’m just sitting here hopeful…optimistic.
And hey, let’s just all love each other. That’s one thing all religions and non-religions have in common.
I could go on and on about other bullied groups, but really, isn’t it all the same? It’s HATE and typically, if you dig down deep, it’s self-hate. If you loved yourself, you wouldn’t feel the need to fill your bucket by dumping others’. You’d be pouring a little of what you have into other’s buckets when they were getting low because you’re overflowing.
I’m done. If you’re one of my bullied groups, and you read this, I want you to know, you’re loved and not everyone is crazy. If you’re a bully and you read this, I hope it makes you think and stop. If you’re neither and you read this, I hope you’re inspired to speak out against hate. And I hope everyone who reads this stops dumping peoples’ emotional buckets and starts filling them.
Peace and Love People
